New strategy to improve healthcare learning

27 September 2022

A new strategy for the east of England will help ensure learners benefit from clinical learning placements that link theory to practice and enable current professionals to pass on their knowledge and experience.

The new Clinical Learning Environment Strategy for the east of England will help shape practice learning in a clinical setting, to enhance quality, grow capacity, and capitalise on innovation.

At the heart of the strategy are compassionate and inclusive learning environments, educational excellence and embracing innovation including technology enhanced learning.

The regional strategy, that was commissioned by HEE, demonstrates a commitment to enhancing the experience of all those within the clinical learning environment including learners, supervisors, educators and the wider team, all of whom are engaged in providing patient care.

Enhancing the quality and capacity of the clinical learning environment will help to provide a sustainable domestic supply of healthcare professionals to meet workforce demand.

The strategy has been created from the contributions of learners and educators and reflects what’s important to them.

Co-produced and endorsed by all six ICBs and regional HEIs it demonstrates the commitment and partnership working existing across the region to improve the quality of education and provides a strong platform to build on the great work already happening and make the learning experience even better for our students and educators.

Gareth George, Head of Education and Transformation,

Health Education East of England

We are delighted to be launching the Clinical Learning Environment Strategy for the east of England. We hope the strategy and approach will provide the enablers that support our workforce, developing health care professionals that make a difference for patients and communities, and have successful careers in the east of England.

Lisa Reynolds, Head of Clinical Learning Environment Transformation

Hosted by Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust

Alongside the strategy is an animation produced to prompt discussion and support implementation. The animation uses stories and voices of students, learners, and educators whose contributions helped develop the strategy, whilst demonstrating how implementation can make a difference to the clinical learning environment.

The strategy has been developed collaboratively working with learners, educators, across systems, social care, higher education institutions (HEIs) and private providers.
