New mentoring programme for early-stage doctors

27 February 2023

Trainees and early-stage doctors from underrepresented groups and being given the opportunity to develop their career mentoring skills. Mentorship is recognised as a two-way process key to personal and professional development and is advocated by many professional bodies and royal colleges.

The reciprocal mentoring programme, commencing in Spring 2023, has been developed to support seniors leaders to better understand the challenges, issues and insight of from underrepresented groups.

The scheme will gives doctors in the early stages of their career who are keen to share their experience, the ability to develop valuable leadership skills.

The programme is open to doctors including trainees, clinical fellows, house officers from underrepresented groups who wish to mentor senior leaders in order to provide them with better understanding of key issues.

This programme supports the delivery of equity, diversity and inclusion programme in the east of England. It will enable and empower staff to learn from and understand the perspectives of our underrepresented colleagues, understand barriers and challenges in order to build new connections and eradicate inequalities. In this context, mentoring will foster a positive dialogue and allow participants to develop approaches to improve staff experiences. It also aims to help engage, retain and promote our brightest talents.

Mentors will need to be available for a virtual induction session. This will be followed by monthly one-hour meetings with mentees over a period of up to six months.  They will also be asked to take part in pre and post programme feedback as part of the project evaluation.

All sessions will be compensated as study leave from HEE and certificate of participation will be provided.
