Professional support and wellbeing (PSW) development day

12 April 2023

PSW dayThe PSW annual development day was held on 31 March and was face-to-face for the first time since 2019. The day provides educators the opportunity to liaise with the PSW team and participate in workshops to better understand how we support trainee doctors, dentists and pharmacists who are referred to the service. This years’ event was themed around ‘moral injury', an incredibly topical and prominent concern within healthcare currently.

The selection of workshops on the day were tailored to provide educators insight into the various stressors that might impact the wellbeing of training practitioners under their tutelage, and how they can best provide support. Content included safeguarding practices, communication techniques, careers advice and how best to support trainees with psychological concerns, while also ensuring the trainer’s own wellbeing is protected.

Dr Francesca Crawley, Associate Dean for PSW, said “It’s our hope that the 74 educators who attended the development day came away with improved knowledge and confidence regarding how they can best support trainee doctors, dentists and pharmacists in crisis. This will in turn allow for the best care to be provided to patients, from generally happier and healthier practitioners of all levels.”

Some quotes from attendees on the day

“The topics were useful and helped develop my role in being able to support and also signpost trainees / trainers”

The Professional Support and Wellbeing Service (PSW) provides additional support to postgraduate doctors, dentists and pharmacists in training and their educators.
