Rhythm Check - the health and wellbeing podcast for doctors in training

10 October 2023

Picture of a GPA new podcast to support the health and wellbeing of doctors in training has been launched by NHS England East.

Rhythm Check offers practical advice and guidance for all trainee doctors and dentists to support their personal and professional wellbeing.

The show is hosted by doctors in training Katie Doig and Florence Swann, as part of their fellowship with the regional Professional Support and Wellbeing (PSW) team.

Katie and Florence will be joined by guests each episode to share their experiences and insight, as well as tips, tricks and learning to support health and wellbeing.

It is well recognised there is significant pressure within the NHS to recruit, protect and retain workers, and the trainee medical workforce is one of the staff cohorts under strain.

Each episode will look at one of the ‘pillars of lifestyle medicine’ explore the biggest challenges and how to tackle them with trainee guests.

The podcast cover topics including nutrition, movement, sleep, staying calm, relationships and avoiding harmful substances.

Episode 1: Sleep

Sleep improves mood, concentration and overall health, and without it we put ourselves at a much higher risk of health problems further down the line. Shift workers are known to be most vulnerable and junior doctors can be at the heart of this.

While doctors advise patients how to prioritise their sleep to benefit their long-term health, many find it hard to take their own advice. What stops us from getting good quality sleep? And how can we overcome this to make it better for ourselves?

This episode discusses three common challenges that trainees face when it comes to sleep.

Hosts Flo and Katie are joined by Sej Modasia, an anaesthetics trainee in the east of England.
