Antimicrobial resistance, polypharmacy and calculations study day

24 February 2023

The antimicrobial resistance, polypharmacy and calculations study day was a full packed study day for our trainee pharmacists.

Trainees spent the morning attempting pharmaceutical calculations, allowing them to identify which areas to focus their learning on in preparation for the GPhC assessment. In the afternoon trainee pharmacists were joined by expert Anna Delf, lead pharmacist for geriatric medicine at University Hospitals of Leicester and Naomi Fleming from NHS England with expertise in antimicrobial resistance.

Anna facilitated discussion around polypharmacy and introduced trainee pharmacists to the toolkits available to support healthcare professionals. Anna also spoke about the risks associated with overprescribing and inappropriate polypharmacy.

Naomi talked about the impact of inappropriate prescribing in relation to antimicrobial resistance and how policy supports antimicrobial stewardship; the importance of optimising the blood culture pathway; utilising the guidance; making timely IV to oral switches and much more.

Anna and Naomi supported trainee pharmacists to analyse the importance of patient factors and local guidance in clinical decision making.
