Trainee pharmacists share their quality improvement projects
24 March 2023
Trainee pharmacists across the Midlands have been working on their audit/quality improvement project throughout March and have begun to present their completed work at their trust, with their training programme facilitators joining them in person or virtually.
The project presentations have covered a diverse range of topics. For example,
- Safe opioid prescribing
- Intravenous vancomycin prescribing
- Gentamicin prescribing in maternity/neonates
- Delirium assessment and the prescribing and cessation of delirium rescue treatments in critical care patients
- Evaluating high dose methotrexate pharmacokinetics to inform length of stay
- Compliance with controlled drug regulations
- Allergy status communication on discharge
- Blood monitoring requirements with Linezolid use
The presentations have been interesting and well received by healthcare professionals at the trusts and the data and information gathered has the potential to inform better ways of working and improve patient care. Feedback from a trainee pharmacist is that creating a short presentation was not time consuming, illustrating how it is possible to incorporate quality improvement activities and initiatives into everyday practice, especially the process of dissemination.
