Minimum standard supervision for advancing practice promoted by the north west

4 April 2023

Transitioning from experienced professional to trainee advanced practitioner to qualified advanced practitioner can be a significant adjustment. We have developed a series of minimum supervision and checklists for supervisors and trainee advanced practitioners to assist with this process.

There is not national curriculum for advancing practice and the minimum standards require advanced practitioners to agree capabilities through their employer in a structured way. The resources include supervision standards, templates and supervisor checklists.

The minimum standards deliver high quality supervision and ensure trainees have:

  • Mandatory supervision.
  • A co-ordinated and allocated education supervisor
  • A minimum of one hour of scheduled supervision every week; of which one in four (once a month) is a scheduled hour with the co-ordinating education supervisor.
  • Debrief and daily supervision in high risk environments or when necessary for patient and practitioner safety.

NHSE North West Workforce, Training and Education Directorate (formerly HEE) strongly encourage people to utilise the minimum supervision standards and documents in your work.

The Workforce, Training and Education Directorate of NHS England (formerly HEE) encourage all staff to utilise the minimum standard supervision resources to ensure success for trainee advance practitioners.

For more information on the resources please contact the North West Advancing Practice Team.
