New chair for the North West Regional People Board

6 December 2022

A new chair has recently been appointed to the North West Regional People Board, which brings together key regional stakeholders around people priorities within the NHS.

Professor Michael Brown, Chair of Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust, has been appointed to chair the board which is jointly overseen by Health Education England and NHS England.

Michael is Chair of the Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust since the past five years and was previously Chairman of the Alder Hey Children’s Charity from 2012 to 2017.

A Chartered Engineer, Chartered Physicist, Companion of the Institute of Management and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Michael was the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Liverpool John Moores University from 2000 to 2011.

He is a Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside and was made a Commander of the British Empire in 2008 for “services to Higher Education and the communities of Liverpool.”

Michael has worked closely on the renaissance of Liverpool. He was Chairman of both the Strategy and Performance and the Closure Committees of the Merseyside Objective One investment programme (investing more than £2 billion into Merseyside), the founding Chairman of the successful Liverpool Science Park and the Chairman of the Merseyside and Liverpool Theatres Trust which operates the Everyman and Playhouse Theatres.

The North West People Board brings together health and care organisations and key stakeholders at the regional level around people priorities to provide strategic leadership to ensure the implementation of the People Plan and Integrated Care Board workforce plans.

HEE and NHS England have supported the development of Regional People Boards across all seven regions of England. This follows on from the publication of the NHS Long Term Plan which set out a clear vision for a new service model with a clear focus on population health management, (primary) prevention, out of hospital and personalised care, reducing health inequalities and better use of NHS technology.
