Professor Jane Mamelok retiring as Regional Postgraduate Dean

29 November 2023

After 38 years’ service to the NHS, Jane Mamelok, NHS England North West’s Regional Postgraduate Dean, is retiring at the end of December.

Jane was born at Manchester’s Stretford Memorial Hospital (1960), educated at Withington Girls School (1968-1978) and left Manchester to go to Durham University (1981) and then University College London Medical School as Graduate Entry to Medicine (1986).

She returned to Manchester to do house jobs in the North West (Macclesfield and Stockport) and completed her GP Vocational Training Scheme at Stockport. In 1990 she was appointed as GP Principal and Partner at Cheadle Medical Practice and has been a GP for over 30 years.

Jane has had an interest in medical education throughout her career as GP trainer, Programme Director, Head of School, Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) Examiner and Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Clinical Lead for Workplace based assessment, Associate Dean, GP Director, Deputy Dean and latterly as Regional Postgraduate Dean for the North West, a role she described as her “dream job” and the highlight of her career.

As Dean she has led national projects around regulation, revalidation and professional standards but is probably best known for her work in developing the Gold Guide (the governance framework for postgraduate medical training). Jane comments that she will most probably be remembered (by doctors in training at least) as the woman who wrote the COVID Outcome 10 derogation. It got us through COVID and enabled progression, so job well done. Although retiring as Dean, Jane will continue to support regulation and professional standards and will move to the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) as a Medical Tribunal member. Jane is looking forward to spending time with her husband David at their place in Cornwall and walking the South West Coastal Path (and others) and hopefully with their new puppy.

Chris Cutts, Regional Director for Workforce, Training and Education, said: “On behalf of NHS England North West, I wish to pass our gratitude to Jane for her long personal dedication and service to the medical profession and its education. We know she is very much looking forward to her next chapter and a well deserved retirement.”
