Devon General Practice (GP) Wellbeing Project: supported by Anna Quine, HEE SW GP Fellow

28 October 2022

Anna QuineThe current challenges for the GP workforce are widely known; we are seeing a steady decline in whole time equivalent GP numbers despite a significant increase in GP training recruitment, at the same time as increasing demands on Primary Care. It is therefore essential, that we develop better understanding of how to effectively support and retain the current GP workforce, in particular, how to detect and support colleagues who are struggling.

The Devon Wellbeing project aims to harness the appraisal process to improve GP wellbeing and offer coaching support and wellbeing opportunities to all GPs in Devon. The project is being led by Dr Vik Mohan, who is working with Devon Local Medical Committees (LMC), NHS England south west, the Practitioner Health Programme, HEE SW School of Primary Care, the Devon Wellbeing Hub, and Devon Training Hub.

Anna is a GP in Devon and has been appointed as an HEE SW School of Primary Care Fellow, supporting this project by carrying out an evaluation. The hope is that if successful, this has potential to be rolled out nationwide to improve GP wellbeing and retention. Through this fellowship, Anna has had the opportunity to work with individuals who are passionate about improving the wellbeing of our colleagues, along with organisations across Devon and the south west. Contact Anna if you would like to hear more about her role.
