Educational and professional development

28 September 2023

The Professional Education and Development (PED) team at NHS England South West is committed to organising and reviewing structured educational activities to support and complement the educational and professional development of postgraduate medical trainers and postgraduate doctors in training across the South West region, including S/AS doctors.

The two main streams of PED are Faculty Development (more recently known as Academic Development) and Education which endorses educational improvements and fosters knowledge and professional skills.

Faculty Development

We aim to ensure that all trainers have sound educational and clinical supervisor training to fulfil core medical responsibilities in keeping with good medical practice and they feel skilled in supporting their postgraduate doctors in training. We provide trainers with a wide range of educational CPD opportunities which are regularly updated according to formal feedback and evaluation, as well as part of a training needs analysis (TNA) which is conducted every five years.

Ensuring our trainers are trained and able to undertake their role as supervisors is of high priority to us as an organisation and for the GMC as the regulator. We are proud that the southwest is consistently rated highly in the annual GMC training survey. NHSE Southwest (formally known as Health Education South West) came top for Professional Development for trainers across all NHSE regions in England in this year’s survey (2023).

Education

We aim to provide postgraduate doctors in training with ongoing support in a wide range of educational and developmental CPD opportunities that lie outside their School Specialty curriculum, including Leadership Development, Quality Improvement, Professional and Generic Skills and Patient Safety.

For all information on Faculty Development and Education events, please link to the PED site on both the Severn Deanery and Peninsula Deanery websites or contact the Faculty Development SW team at england.facultydevelopment.sw@nhs.net.

Currently, all our courses can be booked on MaxCourse; an online booking system. You must create an account to book onto Faculty Development and Education courses. A quick user guide is available on both Severn Deanery and Peninsula Deanery websites.

A course catalogue booklet will be available and uploaded to the websites at the end of September. This offers dedicated ladders of learning to help doctors plan their development in line with core strands of learning. Each learning ladder generally starts with courses only available to Postgraduate Doctors in Training before heading to Supervisor only courses at the top of the learning ladders. Each course page displays who is eligible for the course. Where courses are available for both PG Doctors in Training and Supervisors, the courses are run separately for each cohort.

The core strands for the ladders of learning include:

•         Coaching and Mentoring

•         Communication

•         Educational Teaching

•         Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

•         Leadership

•         Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

•         Personal Development and Welfare

•         Quality Improvement

•         Supporting International Medical Graduates

•         Generic Skills

The Course Catalogue booklet will be available on the Severn Deanery and Peninsula Deanery websites.
