South West award-winning video to enhance patient experiences

27 October 2023

Congratulations to our Special Care Dental team at Bristol Dental Hospital for producing an award-winning patient information video to demystify the process of being admitted for a dental general anaesthetic at the Patient Experience Network National Awards (PENNA) in Birmingham last month.

The PENNA are the first and only awards programme to recognise best practice in patient experience across all facets of health and social care in the UK and awarded the team a Runner Up and Finalist award in the "Use of Technology, Digital and Social Media" and "Personalisation of Care" category.

This project aimed to alleviate patient’s anxieties and pre-treatment fears associated with admission and to assist in becoming familiar with the process. The video was filmed from a patient's perspective with an accurate representation of the role that family or caregivers can play on the day. Additionally, the video introduces the viewer to sensory stimuli they may encounter, such as noises from the anaesthetic machine.

The project involved a collaborative effort from a multi-disciplinary team, working across various specialties at the University Hospital Bristol and Weston Trust including one of our regional Special Care Dentistry trainees, Kiran Singh and Special Care Dentistry Consultant, Jessica Mann whose invaluable contributions played a pivotal role in the project’s success.

“I was extremely proud and happy to be able to represent not only the University Hospital Bristol and Weston Trust and the Dental Hospital but more importantly, Special Care as its own entity! Jess has been instrumental in the success of this project, so I must thank her hugely for her support and guidance throughout it!”  Kiran Singh, Speciality Registrar (StR), Special Care Dentistry at Bristol Dental Hospital.

The video was facilitated by a charitable grant from the Bristol and Weston Hospitals Charity and has been warmly received locally, regionally and nationally, marking its significant impact in the field.

In another victory, the video project secured the first prize in the poster category at the British Society of Special Care Dentistry Spring Meeting this year.
