An update from the foundation schools

18 May 2023

Foundation training is a two-year planned programme of supervised clinical practice designed to bridge the gap between undergraduate and postgraduate medical specialty training. The foundation programme provides skills required by every doctor, as well as professional skills such as communication, teamwork, and the use of evidence and data.

Our Peninsula and Severn foundation schools have worked together to provide an innovative regional teaching programme using local faculty to deliver proven educational material needed by the foundation curriculum and to stimulate interest in specialties beyond foundation. Popular courses include:

  • train the trainer
  • leadership and management
  • orthopaedic skills for foundation doctors
  • essential psychiatry for foundation year 2s
  • remote and restorative medicine
  • plus many more

If you are interested in getting involved in foundation teaching, contact your foundation school.

We have hosted the national foundation doctor’s presentation day in our region for more than a decade. This highly rated event celebrates the work done by foundation doctors across the United Kingdom.

Currently, the foundation programme is undergoing a significant expansion, which will ultimately help increase the number of doctors per person in our region.

Support is available for our doctors and dentists in training, which includes:

- Professional support and wellbeing (south west)

- Career planning service

- Coaching

- Counselling

- Mentoring

You can access this support through either the Peninsula support services or the Severn support services
