Education and supervision must be a priority

3 June 2020

Professor Sheona MacLeod, Acting Director of Education and Quality & Executive Medical Director, Health Education England has today made a clear call for action on the need to reinstate medical training as soon as possible.

Health Education England as part of the four Statutory Education Bodies has sent a letter encouraging medical trainers, trainees and educators to prioritise training and to develop clear plans to address the shortfall in experience that has resulted from the loss of training opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professor Sheona MacLeod, Acting Director of Education and Quality & Executive Medical Director, Health Education England said:

“We are asking our Postgraduate Deans and their teams to work closely with their Local Education Providers, Trusts and GP practices to ensure that postgraduate medical training, and the supervision of other healthcare learners and students, are given the priority they need. This will ensure that training can be delivered to the high standards required and that trainees will be enabled to progress and complete their training so that delivery of care will continue to be safe in the future.”
