West Yorkshire Partnership Trainee Nursing Associate Seminar

5 September 2017

In January 2017, 80 Nursing Associates started on the West Yorkshire Partnership pilot. On the 23 August they all came together at the Bexley Wing, St James Hospital for the first annual seminar.

The Nursing Associate role is a new support role that will sit alongside existing healthcare support workers and fully-qualified registered nurses to deliver hands-on care for patients. Following huge interest some 2,000 people are now in training with providers across England.

It was a very informative day with presentations from:

  • Samantha Donohue, Senior Nurse Manager: Policy, Health Education England
  • Emma Westcott, Assistant Director: Education and Standards at Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Trainee Nursing Associates
  • St Gemma’s Hospice
  • Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust
  • Bradford Teaching Hospital NHS FT
  • University of Leeds
  • Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Heather McClelland comments on the day:

The Seminar brought together all the Nursing Associate trainees from across the West Yorkshire NA Pilot Partnership for the first time, to share and to learn. The day was filled with great speakers, providing both clinical expertise and strategic information on the future of the role. It is vital that, through the partnership, we create NA’s who are knowledgeable, skilled and who practice with strong values for patient-centred care. Hosting seminars such as this is just one way we hope to achieve this.

Samantha Donahue comments on the day:

Excellent day with a rich mix of national updates and clinical seminars. It was lovely to see the Trainee Nursing Associates with their university and trust leads together.
