CapitalNurse IV Therapy Passport webinar – view the recording

24 September 2020

CapitalNurse hosted a webinar on 21 September to share and celebrate the IV Therapy Passport, a training and assessment pathway enabling healthcare professionals to transfer with their intravenous (IV) skills among organisations in London without needing to retrain. A recording is now available (see below).

The IV Therapy Passport is an agreed approach and a pathway through IV medication administration training and assessment. The passport enables healthcare professionals to transfer with their IV skills among organisations in London without needing to retrain.

The Passport was launched in March 2020 and has since been adopted by health providers and health education providers across London and beyond. Over 7000 individual e-assessments have now been completed, which would suggest that around 1000 practitioners have completed and passed the theoretical steps and moved on clinical practice to achieve their IV Therapy Passport.

Over 100 heads of education, IV leads, directors of nursing, nurses and representatives from higher education institutions in London and across England joined the webinar to hear how the IV Therapy Passport is being implemented across London.

Hosted by Michelle Johnson, Chief Nurse at Whittington Health NHS Trust and Executive Sponsor for the IV Therapy Passport, with presentations from Chris Caldwell, Programme Director of CapitalNurse and Jacqueline Robinson- Rouse, Clinical Lead at CapitalNurse alongside the following speakers:

  • Susie Scott, IV Project Lead, CapitalNurse
  • Ropo Olaofe , Nurse Education Practitioner and Hafsoa Begum, Post Graduate Lead, at Barts Health NHS Trust
  • Sam Elliott-Olechnowicz, Pre and Post registration Nurse, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust
  • Laura Gilmore, Senior Teaching Fellow, Kings College London.

Susie Scott IV Project Lead, CapitalNurse says: “I’ve always been passionate about getting intravenous therapy right for patients. It’s a high-risk intervention, it’s complex and proficiency is crucial. We’re proud that the IV Therapy Passport offers one common approach to training and assessment for all healthcare providers and higher education providers, endorsed by the Royal College of Nursing.”

Chris Caldwell, Programme Director of CapitalNurse says:  “Previously, every nurse was required retrain every time they moved employer. This single, standardised approach to IV skills training means that all London nurses will train only once, saving providers time and money and enabling nurses to more effectively meet patients’ needs. I would like to thank all of our partners and stakeholders, without whom this work would not have been possible.”
