The growth of podiatrists who practice podiatric surgery has enabled more treatment options and working with colleagues from other specialties, promotes advanced level holistic care.
From 2020, the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) recognise podiatric surgery as a specialist professional group. To ensure public protection the podiatrist practising podiatric surgery are required to be annotated on the HCPC register. The annotation will indicate that a podiatrist has undertaken HCPC approved training or had their experienced endorsed through an HCPC approved course.

HCPC Annotation as a Podiatrist Practising Podiatric Surgery (Distance Learning)
To gain the HCPC annotation, podiatrists already practising podiatric surgery can undertake the HCPC Annotation Process as a Podiatrist Practising Podiatric Surgery programme at The University of Huddersfield in order to demonstrate that they are meeting the HCPC standards of proficiency. This twelve-week distance education module starts four times a year over the next two years allowing them to fit it in at a time most convenient to them.
It will enable practitioners to demonstrate they meet the HCPC standards of proficiency for podiatrists practising podiatric surgery.
- Successful completion of the course leads to eligibility to apply to be annotated as a podiatrist practising podiatric surgery
- Practitioners will complete a reflective clinical portfolio that will contain your qualifications and evidence of continuing professional development within your specialist field of podiatric surgery
Advanced Practice (Level 7) Apprenticeship - Master of Podiatric Surgery
Practitioners undertaking this course will be eligible to apply for annotation by the HCPC as a podiatrist practising podiatric surgery. It offers those who have already studied the Theory of Podiatric Surgery MSc an opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge allowing them to practice in this specialist area. BY using up-to-date research evidence, policy documents and a wide range of clinical experience, practitioners will be assisted to further update and develop podiatry practice.
- The course incorporates the College of Podiatry fellowship training programme
- It is supported by tutors from the College of Podiatry faculty of podiatric surgery
- It contains a large placement element consisting of 600 hours per year, providing an opportunity to experience real-world scenarios prior to qualifying
- The practitioner will be taught by academics who are practising clinicians within podiatric practice.
University of Huddersfield Master of Podiatric Surgery
The content, learning schedule and outcomes for the Master of Podiatric Surgery meet the principle requirements of the Advanced Practice (Level 7) Apprenticeship standards. The occupational profile and the scope of practice for the Podiatrist Practicing Podiatric Surgery clearly maps to the profile of the Advanced Practitioner. Both roles are required to demonstrate advanced expertise and manage care independently within the working context. Both roles are required to apply clinical expertise with research, leadership and educational skills within their scope of practice.
