Mapping post-registration education and training pathways study

A key focus of national education reform is the provision of a consistent and clear approach to training and career development.

Health Education England commissioned NHS Arden & GEM to conduct a pilot study in the Midlands and East of England, to map training, development, and career progression pathways for pharmacy professionals within community pharmacy, primary care and secondary care (including mental health Trusts).

The aim was to understand how pharmacy professionals are deployed, what training they currently have access to and where the gaps are. The intention was to inform future investment decisions with a view to ensuring that any education commissioning is relevant to identified workforce need across sectors.

Methodology

The pilot study used a mixed research methodology, consisting of bespoke online surveys and roundtable events. The surveys sought the views and experiences of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, line managers and employers across three pharmacy sectors (hospital, community pharmacy and primary care) based within two NHS regions: East of England and the Midlands.

The study also surveyed the views of local and national training providers.

To build on the survey results, several roundtable events were held in November 2022.

Findings

The results of the surveys and roundtable discussions have been analysed and the final report of the pilot study, reflecting findings, can be found on the NHS Arden & GEM website.
