Return to Practice (RtP) funding support 2024/25

Nursing, midwifery and health visiting

Traditional Return to Practice (RtP) funding support (per returner)

• Return to practice programme - £1,600
• Placement fee - £500
• Stipend - £1,000
• Total: £3,100 (This doesn't include London weighting. The cost per returner is higher.) 

Employer-led model programme funding support (per returner)

• Return to practice programme - £1,600
• Placement fee - £1,500
• Stipend - n/a
• Total: £3,100 (This doesn't include London weighting. The cost per returner is higher.)

Test of Competence (per returner)

• Computer based test - £83
• OSCE - £794
• 1 x resit - £397
• Total: £1,274

Test of Competence (ToC) - employer support funding

£2,000 support package (per returner) for any employer supporting a returner to complete the ToC. This funding is to cover the educational support programme and costs of the computer based test (CBT) and OSCE.

Please note that to be eligible for the support package, returners must complete the ToC and take up a role in the NHS or NHS commissioned service by 31 March 2025. 

Back to the Floor nursing and midwifery

£500 placement fee (per returner) for any employer supporting a nurse/midwife with an active registration to return to clinical practice via the back to the floor midwifery/nurse programme. This fee supports induction/supernumerary costs. 

Funding will be transferred to the trust via the Education Funding Agreement, upon appointment of the nurse/midwife. Trusts are asked to notify the national Return to Practice team so arrangements can be made to transfer the funding: england.returntopractice.wm@nhs.net

Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC programme currently has no METIP targets and is nationally funded as follows:

Every returner registered on the NHS England RtP programme for HCPC returners can be reimbursed for up to £800 eligible expenses via our assure expenses reimbursement system.

Eligible organisations supporting a returner with supervised practice can claim £500 from NHS England.
