Spread and adoption

Across the NHS, increasing the scale and spread of innovation is a well recognised and long-standing challenge.

To help address this and support new ways of working, HEE have produced a framework for spread and adoption of workforce innovation. This framework is designed to assist providers and systems with the wider spread of successful workforce transformation initiatives.

Download the framework from the image below:

This framework draws upon a wealth of knowledge, research and evidence to help simplify the spread and adoption of workforce innovations.

It is a distillation of the key success criteria for facilitating the spread and adoption of workforce innovations, locally, regionally or nationally.

It is a simple five step approach which has recently been used successfully to support the spread and adoption of the General Practice Assistant role across 7 regional footprints via Primary Care Training Hubs.

So, as HEE continues to apply this framework across a growing number of workforce initiatives, we would encourage you to do the same and collectively we can continue to meet the challenge of delivering 21st century care.

Helen Podmore & Juliette Swift, National Workforce Transformation Leads

General Practice Assistant

Using the framework, the national workforce transformation team will be supporting a number of programmes to spread and adopt what works well, based on evidence. The first of these was further roll out of the General Practice Assistant (GPA) role following successful pilots in the North West and London, and as a result of growing demands for workforce solutions in primary care and the evolution of Primary Care Training Hubs.

The 12 month programme was launched in April 2019 with a lead training hub in each of 7 regions who host and co-ordinate the introduction of 40 GPA learners.

Due to continued levels of interest from the training hubs, the national workforce transformation team have recently confirmed support for a second wave of learners.
