Delivering greater flexibility

Health Education England is committed to increasing flexibility in postgraduate dental training as part of the Dental Education Reform Programme (DERP). Feedback from aspiring trainees indicates this would support trainees holistically in their personal development, wellbeing and reduce burnout.

Current options for flexible training are detailed below:

1. Less than Full Time (LTFT)

2. Out of Programme

3. Supported Return to Training (SuppoRTT)

4. Flexible Portfolio Training

5. Less than Full Time Training: Paediatric Dentistry Pilot

In July 2023, we launched a Flexibility in Dental Training Report, which summarises the findings of a COPDEND Strategy Workshop and survey. The report outlines some of the fantastic contributions that have shaped the development of flexible training initiatives over the previous year. We hope the report is informative for dentists, educators and system colleagues and continues to enable meaningful change for all those involved.

You can find out more about flexible training options in the Dental Gold Guide 2021.

Improving flexibility in dental training webinar

On Thursday 27 July, we held a webinar to help dentists in training, educators, employers and all interested stakeholders understand all the flexibility options available, to hear current LTFT or OOP trainees talk about their experiences and to ask any other questions, including financial considerations or how to apply. Watch the webinar below.
