Diversity and InclusionWe seek to embrace a workforce that is sensitive to the diversity of the communities that we serve.
We know that a diverse and inclusive workforce can help us to develop new ways of thinking leading to improvement and innovation in the way we work. For us, it is vital that all staff, and the learners we support, are treated fairly and are all enabled to reach their full potential.
We are working to ensure that the themes of diversity and inclusion are furthered across the whole of HEE in all that we do. We recognise the need to advance equality and are committed to developing as an organisation in which all our staff feel valued, respected and able to be themselves in the workplace.
HEE also recognises the system leadership role it can play in advancing diversity and inclusion for the benefit of the whole NHS workforce. HEE is a member of the NHS Equality and Diversity Council (EDC), which works to bring people and organisations together to realise a vision for a personal, fair and diverse health and care system, where everyone counts and the values of the NHS Constitution are brought to life. We are also proud to be a Stonewall Diversity Champion, a Disability Confident employer (Confidence level) and member of Inclusive Employers.
Building accountability to advance diversity and inclusion
A Diversity and Inclusion Committee has been introduced to give assurance to HEE that diversity and inclusion is being advanced across the whole of the organisation.
The committee meets on a quarterly basis to conduct thematic deep dives into the work of HEE and provide recommendations to the Board.
The Committee provides strong representation from across HEE, with membership including Executive Team members, regional chair and director, HR, staff side and members of the HEE Patient Advisory Forum.
The HEE diversity and inclusion lead also attends providing expert input into discussions.
HEE is an organisation that consists of national directorates, alongside local and regional offices. In developing the diversity and inclusion governance and accountability structure, we have recognised the importance of building opportunity for all staff to play a role in taking forward HEE’s diversity and inclusion agenda.
In addition to the Committee, we have introduced four regional AHEAD groups. Led by HEE’s regional chairs and directors, the AHEAD (Advancing HEE’s Equality and Diversity) groups provide an opportunity for regional and local staff to undertake activities that will support HEE in achieving its commitment of becoming an employer of choice, with an inclusive approach to all that it does, which will enable it to fulfil its potential as a system leader for diversity and inclusion.
I am delighted to be championing this area of work and have been overwhelmed by the support and interest shown from colleagues across our organisation. Whilst workforce demands are changing, equality and diversity within society are ever-evolving. HEE is embracing these changes by ensuring that the organisation exercises fairness across the organisation. We are fully committed to valuing our staff and to promoting a discrimination free workplace.
Lisa Bayliss-Pratt – Executive Lead for Equality and Diversity
