Why can HEE not just increase training numbers?

We understand that it can appear that HEE are not just increasing training numbers, however, the number of training posts are closely monitored and capped, we cannot just increase post numbers year on year. HEE are bound by a tight financial envelope that means we are restricted on the number of training programme numbers available at any one time.

HEE is committed to increasing all areas of the healthcare workforce and continue to lobby to increase workforce numbers at each opportunity. In the 2023 recruitment there is an overall increase of 918 posts which have come through three expansion funding workstreams; cancer and diagnostics, mental health and acute and elective recovery. There was also a significant increase in post numbers in 2022.
