Pharmacy Technician Workforce Expansion Project

Building on two successful national pilots designed to grow the pharmacy technician workforce, we are pleased to announce a new funding opportunity to train and develop pre-registration trainee pharmacy technicians (PTPTs) in 2021/22.

The Pharmacy Technician Workforce Expansion Project 2021/22 helps employers develop PTPTs across England, either as part of a cross-sector programme or a single-sector training programme in a community pharmacy or acute trust. This is additional to HEE’s annual regional commissions.

Cross-sector partnerships include a minimum of two healthcare settings, one of which must be either a community or hospital pharmacy.

Funding to support acute/secondary care sector placements were awarded at the regional level to meet additional workforce development needs.

Cross-sector and community pharmacy employers submitted bids for placement funding. These bids were evaluated against the programme criteria and in line along with local intelligence of workforce needs to inform the allocations placement funding.

Positive engagement with employers resulted in over 450 bids.

In total, the Pharmacy Technician Workforce Expansion Project is funding 356 PTPT placements across England.
