The Dementia Education and Learning Through Simulation 2 (DEALTS 2) resources provide a simulation-based training package for staff working regularly with people living with dementia.
The simulation approach aims to facilitate staff to consider experiences from the point of view of a person living with dementia. These resources can be adapted to be relevant in different settings, and have been designed using low key simulation scenarios, with the opportunity to be adjusted to suit the level of resources available.
These resources address three of the 14 learning outcomes for tier 2 training including risk reduction and prevention, person-centred care and communication as outlined in the Dementia Core Skills Education and Training Framework.
The resources are designed to be used by experienced trainers, and include a train the trainer element to support sustainability of learning within organisations.
The resource package has been quality assured using the hallmarks of good dementia training identified by the ‘‘What Works’ research study led by Leeds Beckett University.

The DEALTS 2 has recently been adapted to an e-learning version. This was in response to a need for alternative approaches to face to face dementia training highlighted by trainers working in hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing requirement for blended training delivery approaches across the acute care sector.
The e-Learning Dementia Education and Learning Through Simulation 2 (e-DEALTS 2) programme is appropriate for all clinical and non-clinical qualified health and social care staff and volunteers who require Tier 2 dementia training (i.e. those who have regular contact with people with dementia). Thus, the e-DEALTS 2 trainer toolkit enables providers to access the training resources at times most suitable to their organisation's needs.
The programme is delivered virtually using a simulation approach, designed to provide opportunities to understand the lived experience by putting attendees into the shoes of a person with dementia. Three of the 12 subject areas at Tier 2 are covered in the e-DEALTS 2 training: risk reduction and prevention, person-centred care and communication, interaction, and behaviour.
