Midwifery training places expansion

HEE has been working with system partners to support an expansion in midwifery training placements by 25% over four years.

Since the Secretary of State announcement on 27 March 2018, and the publication of the Maternity Workforce Transformation Strategy HEE has been working with stakeholders to support expansion of midwifery training places.

This expansion is to increase capacity within the system and help work towards ensuring there is adequate workforce supply in the medium and long term to support women, their babies and families.

Working over a four-year period from 2019/20, HEE will increase training places by up to 3650. This will be achieved by:

  • An 650 additional places in 2019/20; and
  • Up to 1,000 additional places per year for a period of three years thereafter

Progress

  • Expansion is reported against the baseline year 2018/19 and a growth of 1,237 as of February 2022, giving a total figure of 3,003
  • HEE remains confident of achieving this overall target by the end of 2022/23.
