Use of language
It is important that in our messaging to people with a learning disability, autistic people and members of the public we use everyday words to talk about people. This helps everyone to understand and to feel valued. The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training team use the guidance on NHS England’s Making information and the words we use accessible webpage across all communication and engagement activity and training materials.
In addition, the team have developed a style guide (Appendix 1) and agreed the following language principles, with partners, as well as people with a learning disability and autistic people, when we speak and write about The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism:
-
We refer to this training as “The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism” and if for comprehension and reading purposes it needs to be shortened, it should always be stated in full and then referred to as “The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training” or “Oliver’s Training”. We never abbreviate the training to “OMMT”. Please don’t use “the training”, use Oliver’s Training
-
To avoid misinterpretation, make sure you explain who is co-delivering or which experts with lived experience are involved. For example, say “co-delivered with people with a learning disability and autistic people”.
