We have published a suite of employer resources to help health and care employers and integrated care systems (ICSs) prepare for The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism. We will regularly update and add new resources to this webpage.
Catch up on recent all stakeholder webinar - 27 March 2024
On Wednesday 27 March, an all-stakeholder webinar was delivered about the progress for The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism. It included key updates from NHS England, DHSC, CQC and Paula McGowan OBE.
The session covered the roll out, accreditation, code of practice and Oliver's Campaign. You can now watch the webinar recordings, including a British Sign Language versions, on YouTube. The webinar slides [1.3MB] are also available to download.
Tier guidance
It is the employers’ responsibility to ensure their staff have the appropriate training for their roles and they will need to advise staff on whether they should complete Tier 1 or Tier 2 and if any additional training might be required. To support employers, we recently developed The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Tier guidance for employers with examples.
Recruiting, involving and supporting people with lived experience with The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training
Co-production is the core principle of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism. It is essential that experts with lived experience co-delivering the training are well supported in applying for and undertaking their training roles.
Our delivery model explains how trainers are prepared and the trainer training cascade model. It is important to note, NHS England does not carry out DBS or any pre-employment checks on approved trainers. To help employers recruit and involve people with a learning disability and autistic people as trainers for The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training, we have published the following:

Local examples of how employers are rolling out Oliver’s Training can be found in the FAQs (see questions 2, 19, 22, 24, 49).
Express an interest
We are working with partners to arrange trainers' training to prepare people with a learning disability and autistic people and facilitating trainers co-deliver the online interactive and face to face sessions of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism. Each Integrated Care System is being supported to develop training capacity.
