CapitalAHP Preceptorship

What is Preceptorship and who is it aimed at?

Preceptorship is defined by the Department of Health (2010) as ‘a period of structured transition for the newly-registered practitioner, during which he or she will be supported by a preceptor, to develop their confidence as an autonomous professional, refine skills, values and behaviours and to continue on their journey of life-long learning.’

Benefits of preceptorship

There are many potential benefits of preceptorship, all of which are linked to patient satisfaction, quality of care, retention and enhanced recruitment:

  • developing confidence
  • positive socialisation into the working environment
  • peer support
  • increased job satisfaction
  • feeling valued, respected and invested in by employers
  • and increased commitment to the employer and profession

National allied health professionals preceptorship and foundation support programme:

The National AHP Preceptorship and Foundation Support Programme has been established to ensure that AHPs receive high quality preceptorship and foundation support as they transition into employment.

Our aim is to have inclusive access to tailored support and development opportunities across a range of transitions into employment to help them grow in confidence as an autonomous and accountable practitioner, enhance career development, improve recruitment and retention whilst ultimately supporting the development of a diverse workforce fit for the future.

CapitalAHP Preceptorship Framework

The National AHP Preceptorship replaced the CapitalAHP framework in 2024. However, following extensive consultation across the region, Capital organisations opted to adjust 4 of the national standards (highlighted in red) and removed national standard 5.5.

CapitalAHP Recognition Award

The CapitalAHP Recognition Award helps you to benchmark preceptorship against the CapitalAHP standards. It helps organisations to self-assess and review the quality of their preceptorship offer across different transitions, maintaining and developing consistent quality across the Capital. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the work of organisations of developing and sustaining preceptorship.

This is an annual submission in March each year.
